First Impressions: Axis Q1615 Mk II With i-CS Lens

First Impressions: Axis Q1615 MkII with i-CS lens
First Impressions: Axis Q1615 MkII with i-CS lens

Axis Q1615 Mark II with i-CS lens arrived at the SEN office the other day and about 10 minutes later it was up and running as I tried to work out whether or not the partnership between Axis and Computar lives up to the hype.

Actually, it does. The 1080p Q1615 was good anyway and the Computar 2.8-8.5mm i-CS lens; which communicates data about baseline lens geometrical distortion and the exact position of its zoom, focus and iris opening; takes the camera’s capabilities to a higher level. What this camera’s distortion correction does is allow the use of a very wide angle motorised varifocal lens without any of the distracting hobbit hole effect you always see at 2.8mm. Typically, I'd be reaching for about 4.5mm with a lens in this range but you don't need to dial out distortion with the Mark II.

Special Report: New Products From Security 2016 Expo

Bosch B Series alarm panel
Bosch B Series alarm panel

Security 2016 Exhibition in Melbourne gave us a chance to take a look at the latest product releases, get a sense of trends, as well checking out some of the vapourware teasers that manufacturers and distributors roll out at big events.

SECURITY 2016 had a nice feel – it’s a good venue and the square layout at the MCEC somehow mitigates the sense of being tucked away in far corners. The organisers quoted visitor numbers of around 4500, which seemed slightly optimistic from behind Sony's New York Loft Bar. Regardless, it was another good show considering this was a third year in Melbourne thanks to the ongoing revamp of the Exhibition and Convention Centre in Darling Harbour. While some exhibitors were jumping to conclusions on the first day, by the end of the show on Friday afternoon, most were happy with the turnout and quality of the visitors they'd seen.

Test Driving The Synology VisualStation VS360HD

Synology VS360HD
Synology VS360HD

Synology’s VS360HD VisualStation is designed to replace the workstation in an IP surveillance solution, providing full management and control of connected cameras from any connected monitor on network fringes. The unit is especially well adapted to supporting retail and reception applications.

SYNOLOGY is well known as a manufacturer of digital storage solutions but the company also makes Surveillance Station software, which turns its network area storage devices into capable video surveillance solutions. Of course, using a NAS to handle some of the tasks of an NVR isn’t always easy and it relies on workstations across the network to handle the grunt work of live monitoring. And this is where our story begins.

FSH SCEC-Approved FSS1 Hall Effect Door Sensor

FSH has received SCEC approval (Security Level 4) for its FSS1 high security door monitoring sensor, which has been designed and manufactured in Australia for military, correctional and high security applications.

FSS1 is a big deal for FSH and for the entire high security end of the access control and intrusion detection market, which has been waiting for a solution of this calibre since the Jackson Report found flaws in the security performance of existing high security door monitoring devices. The FSH sensor is available in flush or surface mount variations and replaces traditional high security magnetic balanced reed switches using a Hall Effect sensor and programmable magnetic plate combination that allows the unit to be re-calibrated to circumvent door drop, which would otherwise lead to replacement of sensors or re-hanging of doors.
